2018-19 SEASON
In our fourth season, we explored the narrative power of music. Each of our works were centered around stories, from fairy tales and real life alike.
CHAI Collaborative Ensemble (CCE) kicks off their 2018-19 Season at KOVAL Distillery (5121 N. Ravenswood Ave., Chicago) on Saturday September 15, from 7-9pm. Our friends at KOVAL Distillery are generously offering a cocktail class featuring concoctions from the Prohibition Era.
Join us for hors d'ouvres and merriment, and learn some new mixology tricks, all while supporting local chamber music. This event is sure to be the bee's knees!
Advance tickets are available for $50. Limited seating is available, so be sure to purchase well ahead of time.

CCE's opening concert cycle explores stories inspired by nature and folklore. Dan Welcher's Mill Songs for oboe and bassoon are a nod to Franz Schubert's iconic song cycle Die Schöne Müllerin. Marcia Kraus' Three Fairy Tales for soprano, oboe, and piano pay homage to three stories by Hans Christian Andersen. Completing the program are Chicago composer Daniel Pesca's Whence the Shadows Fell for soprano, bassoon, and piano; and Francis Poulenc's Trio for oboe, bassoon, and piano.

Cycle II: A Mother's Love

This concert cycle features stories from a dark time in American history, anchored by Evan Williams' A Mother's Love. In Williams' words, "the texts are by Black female poets who were involved in the Abolitionist movement. They decry the evils of slavery, its destruction of families, and ask fellow white mothers to stand against slavery, in the name of love and family." Rounding out the program are Gabriela Lena Frank's Honey for soprano, mezzo-soprano and piano; Laura Elise Schwendinger's Love Sonnets for mezzo-soprano and violin, which set Shakespeare's Sonnets 116, 147, and 18; and Louise Farrenc's Trio for clarinet, cello, and piano, Op. 44.

CCE is proud to continue a tradition of collaborations for social good. This year we are partnering with the Chicago Chamber Choir to benefit the work of the Night Ministry, a North Side charity dedicated to "helping adults and youth who struggle with homelessness, poverty, and loneliness." The concerts are a free-will offering, and feature Caroline Shaw's To the Hands, Ted Hearne's Privilege, and movements of Dieterich Buxtehude's Membra Jesu Nostri.

CCE concludes its fourth season with a potpourri of 20th and 21st-century works. Featured works include Alan Louis Smith's Folk Songs for soprano, viola, and piano, Nico Muhly's Object Songs, Margaret Brouwer's Trio for violin, clarinet, and piano, and Paul Hindemith's Sonata for trumpet and piano.
