With a shared dedication to exploring a variety of sounds, advocating for new works, and engaging diverse audiences in the communities where they perform, both ensembles are passionate about combining music performance and social consciousness in their programming.

SATURDAY, MARCH 10, 2018 | WOLF, BRITTEN, LEMAY, & MESSIAEN

7:30 PM | Atlas Arts Media

4809 N. Ravenswood Avenue

CCE weaves together the topics of love and war, and features a selection of songs by Hugo Wolf and Benjamin Britten, the World Premiere of What I did for Love – a work by American composer Marc LeMay based on texts by Panamá-born, NYC-based poet Darrel Alejandro Holnes, and Olivier Messiaen’s harrowing Quartet for the End of Time, one of his most significant works. Love is a frequent subject in Wolf’s Lieder, and is illustrated in Holnes’ poetry set by LeMay. Britten was openly against war during a time when such beliefs were contrary to popular opinion. The songs of Britten’s to be performed, selections from his settings of nine of The Holy Sonnets of John Donne, were written after he visited and performed at the liberated Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, and witnessed the aftermath of the horrors there. Messiaen wrote and premiered his Quartet for the end of time for himself and three fellow musicians while in a prison camp during World War II.

Uniting these works is a shared sense of resilience and a continued will to create art, even amid uncertain times. Join us for this special and provocative program.

Wolf: Selections from Eichendorff-Lieder

Britten: Selections from The Holy Sonnets of John Donne
